There are many important marine animals on the island, including Hammerhead sharks and Green Sea Turtles. You can also find a large population of swallow-tailed gulls and tropicbirds, which nest on cliffs.
The waters around North Seymour have a high level of nutrients which helps to sustain healthy sea lion populations. You can also see the largest Frigatebird colony of the Galapagos. These birds are magnificent. These birds have bright red puffy throats that look almost like balloons.
Espanola
Espanola is a beautiful island in the Galapagos Islands. It is home to the Waved Albatross (a critically endangered bird). Originally listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, the species is being monitored by the Charles Darwin Foundation. The Waved Albatross, which has a wingspan between 2 and 2.5 meters, is the largest bird in Galapagos. It is threatened by global warming and fishing near the mainland.
The only known breeding area for the Waved Albatross is on Espanola. Incubation is shared by the pair. Each year, the two birds produce one egg. The entire colony leaves the island by January.
Suarez Point is one of Espanola's most famous wildlife spots. You will find the Blue-footed Booby and Nazca here, as well as Galapagos Doves (Darwin's Finches) and Galapagos Doves.
Charles Darwin Research Station
Located on the island of Santa Cruz, the Charles Darwin Research Station is an international scientific and conservation center. It is operated by the nonprofit Charles Darwin Foundation. It carries out educational projects in support of the conservation of the islands.
